Hospital Development

The need for developing the hospital into a specialty medical centre providing quality specialty care to the poor tribal patients free of cost was long felt. The aim was to set up a labour room, operation theatre, ICU, New born ICU and additional wards to provide maternity care with facility for delivery and caesarean sections. A tangible need for doing regular general surgeries for the poor had to be addressed. An Emergency Room for providing protocol based initial (golden minute and golden hour) management for medical emergencies and trauma cases was envisaged. Laboratory facilities for doing advanced biochemical and haematological investigations were needed in the hospital. The hospital would require committed and experienced specialist doctors to offer the specialty medical care.

The project was conceived and initiated in 2012.The total project cost was Rs. 80 lakhs. Initial help was received from friends in the UAE like Ekata (Sharjah), Bharat Vikas Parishad (Abudhabi) and Ayyappa Puja Samithi (Dubai). Later on substantial support was received from Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Kochi due to which the project was successfully completed in September 2015. Support was received from many noble individuals and organisations. The new wards and facilities were inaugurated by Sri Pon Radhakrishnan, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Roads, Transport and Shipping on 18th September 2015.

The equipment for Labour room was donated by State Bank of Travancore. Equipment for ICU and a generator were donated by Kerala State Financial Enterprises. Shanthi Gears Ltd., Coimbatore donated operation theatre table and a monitor for the theatre. Equipment for Newborn ICU was donated by Dr.N.Anand (Bangalore) in memory of his beloved father Sri S.V.Narasimhan.

A semi-autoanalyzer and a blood cell counter for the laboratory were donated by some friends from Saudi Arabia. X ray was donated by a group of philanthropists led by Sri D.Arunachalam and Dr.Sangeetha Viswanathan. Mattresses and pillows were donated by members of Coimbatore Nair Samajam. An advanced ECG machine was installed with help from Dr.J.K.Raman (USA) and Rotary Club of Olavakode.

The total bed strength of the hospital has been increased to 30.

A dental clinic was set up with the help of Indian Dental Association (IDA), Valluvanad branch under the leadership of Dr.Subhash Madhavan, Chairman of Community Dental Health, IDA Kerala and Dr.Sreekanth S, President, IDA, Valluvanad Branch. The dental chair, instruments and consumables were donated by IDA. Dr.PR.Varsha is the dentist managing the daily dental OP. All procedures are performed in the clinic. Free dental treatment is being given to all tribal patients at this clinic.

An Emergency room and ICU are now functioning with all necessary equipment in place. The nursing staffs are being given regular training to upgrade their skills in the Emergency room.
